Montemerano

Perched on a hill from which it dominates the Tuscan hills, Montemerano is definitely one of the most beautiful and unique villages in the Maremma; its historic center is among the most interesting in the territory because it is rich in medieval architectural elements.

The building that best represents the village is the Church of San Giorgio, dedicated to the patron saint of the village, the structure was built during the Middle Ages and today houses important works of art, paintings and frescoes mainly dating back to the Renaissance; just outside Montemerano instead we find the Church of the Madonna del Cavalluzzo, surrounded by the Maremma countryside and numerous olive groves.

The history of the village begins under the domination of the Aldobrandes, which is followed by that of the Basques, the powerful city of Orvieto, the Republic of Siena and, as in a script already written, following the fate of the other territories of the Maremma, it was incorporated into the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and submitted to the power of the Medici family.
