Sovana

An important archaeological site in the Maremma, Sovana is located a few kilometers from Pitigliano and hosts one of the largest and richest necropolises in Tuscany; the town is mainly centered around the town’s main square, known as Piazza del Pretorio, where the town’s most important monuments also stand.

The history of Sovana is strongly linked to the presence of the Etruscan people who, in ancient times, colonized the territory and built villages and settlements there, later there was the advent of the Roman people and during the Middle Ages the domain of the Maremma village was taken by Aldobrandeschi, from the Orsini and finally from the city of Florence and then from the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.

In Sovana, also famous for having been the birthplace of Pope Gregory VII, there is the church of Santa Pietro e Paolo, the Palazzo del Pretorio, the Loggetta del Capitano, the Palazzo Bourbon-del Monte, seat of the country’s governors, the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore and the ruins of the ancient Church dedicated to San Mamiliano.
